CHAPTER 15 – The last attempt – part 1

Dracula was still shabby from the grueling battle, but it was not time to rest yet, and he was, in fact, already flying into the forest, protected from the sun by thick vegetation and attracted by the noise and the chatter of human explorers.

He went down the trail that connected the castle with the outside world and soon met the zombies and suits of armor who tried to hide it with rocks or bushes. Their work was a bit slow, but not even Drac could distinguish the trail.

The vampire went on, passing the tree men who had thickened the forest, slowing the advance of humans, as he perched on a branch from where he watched the explorers. They were noisy and sloppy; they advanced slowly and awkwardly in the thick undergrowth. But despite their inability all had one thing in common: the stubbornness, and that's why Drac was concerned. He knew that such people would not give up even after a hundred failures, but he could not allow them to get to the castle.

"I've already had experience with this kind of humans, how did I send him away?" The vampire muttered to herself, "Well… I failed miserably with him ... but maybe he knows what to do!" He concluded, hopeful, and he flew back without wasting any time.

The castle's hall was deserted as it had never been. The entire staff had been sent to the forest and the flourishing hotel already seemed abandoned, perhaps a taste of what it would really happen a little later.

The old count turned into human form, looking around and sighing, sad and regretful, then walked towards the elevator.

Shortly after, he arrived at the door of the room of Johnathan, and he just looked at the handle, thoughtfully. He would have preferred not to ask for help, but he had to put aside his pride, just for this time. He slowly raised his hand and knocked three times.

On the other side the boy replied immediately, "How's Mavy?" He knew very well who had knocked.

The vampire went in and found the boy sitting in the opposite corner of the room with his back to the wall. The man was silent for a moment, "Mavy is fine, she's just very worried. What she has done has brought back bad memories in her mind."

"She is not the only one..." The boy replied, thoughtfully, "But you knew about that?"

"About the demon?"

Johnathan replied with a sigh.

"Let's just say that I preferred to pretend it was all over, but, in fact, I did know that a demon can't die. Not so easily, anyway. It is now a part of her and she will have to learn to live with it... and to keep it under control. She is with her aunt Wanda right now. She was always the one she trusted in, the person who is closest to being a mother figure for her. I'd rather be beside Mavis, but I have to think up something to stop these people. They are less than a mile away from here and I don't know what to do... "

Johnathan thought for a moment, "You can't stop them; they know that there is something in this woods, so even if they fail, they will try again. The only thing we can do is give them what they want."

"So I should leave the castle and fill it with dust and cobwebs to give it an uninhabited feeling?"

"Well, I don't think we need it, the castle is already quite dirty and battered ..." The boy replied, chuckling, "The only images that these people have are the satellite photos, so they are viewed from above and in low quality. We can… camouflage the castle."

"Making the castle, invisible would not be a problem, but if someone set foot on the island he would smack his nose on the walls." The count replied, sadly.

"No, not invisible. I'm saying that you can make it resemble some strange rocky formation which looks vaguely a castle from above. Nature is full of oddities. Look at this photo of when I was at the Grand Canyon. This rock seems almost a head! "Said the young man showing a photo in his phone to the vampire, who looked at the pictures intrigued.

"I see you've met Rocky. He's a great sleeper. However I got a great idea, I can awaken all the golems with the lake's clay of and cover the castle with them, so it seems like a continuation of the island's mountain!" Drac exclaimed, proud of himself, paying no attention to Johnny, who glared at him and replied:

"This idea was mine..."

But the vampire pretended not to hear him and ran away immediately. He walked into the reception, where he took a handful of paper, an inkwell, and a pen.

"My ancient Hebrew is a bit rusty, I hope this works..."

Then he dipped his pen in the ink and wrote the same words on all sheets, using indecipherable characters.

"What are you doing?" Johnathan interjected, suddenly appearing with his chin resting on Drac's shoulder.

"They are matrices to wake golems, they are used to animate objects and force them to follow the order you write on these sheets."

"Cool... and how do they work?" The boy asked, taking one.

"Don't touch it! They contain a very ancient and powerful spell!"

"Ok, ok..." Johnny said, bored, placing it firmly on the reception desk and patting his hand on it.

The vampire suddenly widened his eyes, full of concern while the magic sheet that the human had put at the table was absorbed by the wood itself, and a moment later the desk reared, dropping all that was above it. It whinnied and galloped at full speed towards a wall against which it jumped, smashing itself.

Dracula, thanks to its high speed was able to take the magic sheets away before they scattered around, but the rest of the objects had poured on to the Count and his coat was stained by the ink.

Dracula was enraged to the point where he almost exploded, but he forced himself to stay calm.

"Instead of wasting time here, why don't you bring all the guests into the dungeons?" He said through clenched teeth, "If my plan doesn't work, we must be ready for plan B."

Jonathan made a shaky smirk, "At this point I go, I also want to go and see if Mavis is fine..." And he ran away, before being forced to suffer the old vampire's wrath.

Knock, knock...

The young man knocked at door 174, but got no answer.

"Mavis, are you in your room?" He asked in an uncertain but reassuring voice.

"Yes, she's in her room, I think you can come in." A sweet voice replied, although a bit worried. It was Wanda who had opened the door to the boy.

"H-how is she?" Johnny asked, hesitantly.

The wolf-lady shrugged, "She's worried. We all are. I hope Drac can solve all these problems... but meanwhile, you go to her, she needs you. I'll leave you alone." She concluded with an encouraging smile.

The boy sighed; he was concerned, perhaps more than anyone else. He did not want to admit it, but he was afraid of Mavis. Despite this, he mustered his courage and entered the room slowly. He took a few steps inside, but saw no one.

"Johnny?" A faint voice said, cold, but familiar.

The boy looked up. The young vampire was on the roof above him, sitting with her knees up and her head sank on her legs.
