CHAPTER 8 - Tempting devils

"Yes, I can read lips and even sign language. It was convenient having deaf maids who couldn't hear the cries of the girls I tortured. " Erzebeth replied, coldly.

Ruthven grinned in silence for a few seconds before replying in turn:

"I can't. It would be better if you went up, Dracula took a thousand precautions not to be heard, so they must have talked about something very important."

"You're always the same incompetent…!" The vampiress rebuked him, putting a hand to her face, full of disappointment. "But at least now we know for sure that they are hiding something big."

The sun had already risen on the old castle and now all the guests were sleeping, all except a few.

"Well, Mavy, it's beginning to get late, maybe I should go back to my room..." Jonathan said, his voice trembling with embarrassment as he sat up on the bed.

"Already? " Mavis replied, still lying down, as she clung to him by his arm to prevent him from leaving.

"Mavy, Please, I'm tired, I need sleep."

"Stay here!" She proposed to him, smiling.

"Don't tempt me; you know your father doesn't me want to! He would kill me!"

"It's that I feel so strange, so full of energy that... I wish this feeling would never end." Then she sat up and embraced him resting her head between his neck and shoulder. "Your scent is so good..." She whispered lovingly. "That makes me want to eat you." She concluded. Her voice was calm, but so threatening as to be almost unrecognizable.

A cold shiver went through the boy's back when he heard the soft sigh of the young vampire on his neck.

Sure, it was nice, but those words reminded him of the young vampire's behavior when she craved his blood.

Jonathan pushed Mavis away, forcefully, standing up and taking a few steps back; he was scared, but he soon saw she was as surprised and scared as him.

"Jonny? What's gotten into you? Why did you push me like that?" The vampiress asked him, confused and a little angry.

"Sorry, it's that... You scared me... You know, with what you've done..." The human replied, repentant for his excessive reaction.

"Is it my fault?" She asked him, concerned to have inadvertently done something wrong, but even before Jonathan could reply, she let out a sad sigh, looking down. "I understand, I'm sorry..." She said in a sad and regretful voice, then raised her knees and leaned her forehead on them, hugging her legs. "I'm a fool; I should have realized that after what happened to you, it's normal you don't want me to get too close to your neck. Forgive me..."

Jonny blinked. "No, you're wrong, that's not the problem, it's because of what you said."

Mavis looked up, puzzled. "Don't you like it when I say you have a good smell?"

"No, that is to say, yes, that is... I was referring to what you said later." He stammered.

The girl raised an eyebrow, confused, "I didn't say anything else."

Jonathan looked at her dazed, "You sure? " He asked her, though now he was no longer sure of what he had heard.

"Yes, I just kissed your neck and you push me off." She replied, crossing her arms, pouting.

"Well... then I'm sorry, I must have had a hallucination, maybe I should go rest..." The boy said, scratching his head, embarrassed.

"Yes, I think you should. " Mavis replied, coldly, leaving the arm of her embittered boyfriend. Usually she would have insisted on not letting him go, but maybe she was still angry and she should have the right.

"Good night, or rather, good morning." He wished her before walking to the door.

"Sweet dreams Jonny..." She murmured in response, but she seemed distracted by her thoughts, so much so that she didn't even get up to accompany him to the exit.

It was only when the door was closed that the vampiress she awoken by her thoughts, so she got out of bed walking to the bathroom sink where she washed her face with cold water to clear her mind.

"I couldn't have said that, I couldn't have said that..." She repeated to herself, "I'm sure I just thought it! I can't relapse into that addiction, not again. And yet I could control myself... what's happening to me? " But the thoughts of the young vampiress were interrupted by someone knocking on her door.

"Mavy Wavy? Are you in the room? I saw Jonny come out a moment ago! Can I come in for a second?" It was Drac who spoke with his usual gentle and fatherly voice.

"Yeah, come on in..."

The old count came slowly to his daughter; he almost had a smile from ear to ear.

"Sweet guts? I have a surprise for you!" He exclaimed with enthusiasm, even if Mavis in was a totally different mood.

"Tell me. " She cut him short, totally disinterested, imagining that it would be just another farce in which she began to feel too old for wanting to participate.

"Well, my child, you know we worked hard in the last few weeks to restructure the hotel and thanks to your and Jonny's help, we were able to complete the work in advance and for that you deserve a great gift."

Mavis looked up, finally appearing interested.

"You know you're now grown, even though I realized it later. I'm sorry to have been so blinded by fear to see you suffer and that I have deprived you of your liberty. I was egoist and foolish to not allow yourself to live your life... it is that I was afraid to be left alone... Enough said, now that I've finally got free time we can go to visit my old home, the Lubove castle!"

"When do we go there?" She answered him, impassive, as if she had not realized what her father had just said.

"I don't know... do you have any commitments for tonight?"

The girl remained silent for a moment as her eyes and mouth widened more and more, loads of surprise and delight.

"I… I can't believe it..." She whispered, her voice broken with emotion, "R"Really? " She concluded almost suffocated by all that happiness.

Her father merely smiled and nodded his head; he tried to hold back his emotions too but he could not stop a tear of joy which fell slowly down his cheek. Even his daughter could not help but let herself go and jumped to her father, hugging him tight.

"Can you say that from now on I can visit all over the world with Jonny? I have to tell him now!" Mavis exclaimed, breaking the hug.

"Hey, honey"claws don't rush things too much; there are many things that you need to learn about the human world before you can visit it. Remember that no one can find out what you really are, but I think Jonny will be an excellent teacher. Consider today's trip a little preview."

The young vampiress pouted, but she understood her father's reasoning and immediately she smiled at him to let him know that she agreed with him.

"But about Jonny, I saw him leave your room a little while ago, he seemed upset, did something happen? " Dracula asked a bit worried.

"No, don't worry, he was just tired." Mavis said, smiling to hide her concerns from her father.

"Okay, But now you must sleep, my little bat, if he was tired you will be too. I want you to be rested for this new adventure." Drac said to her, lovingly, then kissed her gently on her forehead and stood up heading for the door and greeted his daughter one last time with a smile.

The young vampiress was again alone in her room, lit by candles in spite of the clear morning that was beyond the heavy curtains of her window. Her trip would begin at sunset and the sun had just risen, so she would have enough time to rest.

The girl burst out vigorously in a cloud of purple smoke, "Yah! I can't believe it!" She cried the little bat coming out of the magical mist, flapping frantically through the room and continuing to vent her own happiness noisily surly not disturbing anyone in the almost empty hotel. Then she swooped down into the closet and came out in her human form, wearing her black long nightgown, ready for sleep.

Lying on the bed she extinguished the candles with a snap of her fingers hoping that sleeping would pass the day away day quickly, but it did not. The trepidation kept her awake and more time passed, the more she fidgeted on the bed.

"Holy rabies! " Mavis exclaimed, sitting up on her bed, angry. "Why can't I sleep?!" She screamed hysterically, throwing away the sheets, but she immediately felt her blood boiling. It was not normal for her to become so nervous about something so banal, and she knew it. She looked around, her heart was pounding so fast that she seemed to have it in her throat; but that was not the only strange thing, in fact her gums began to hurt. It was not a new sensation, she immediately remembered the last time she had felt it, and was not reassuring.

"No, it's not possible, please, not..." Mavis muttered to herself, more and more agitated, then she ran her tongue over her teeth and sighed gloomily, looking down, while two tears furrowed down her face. Her worrying hypothesis was confirmed, her fangs were unsheathed and sharpened. She was hungry, so much so that she began to feel stomach cramps.

The vampiress put her hands on her face and took a deep breath to try to calm down, but she noticed the little light that filtered through the window of her room became more and more feeble.

"Damn... The sun is almost down; I have to find a solution before Jonny and my father look for me. "

Mavis jumped out of bed and ran out of her room slamming the door, then went through the corridors at full speed without listening to the shrunken heads who grumbled to be silent and not disturb, and without even caring about maids who she had almost hit in her race, which ended when, after turning a corner down the stairs, she crashed into someone, rolling the last flight of stairs.

"Ouch, what a blow..." The young vampiress groaned, while she stood up still sore and confused. "I'm so sorry, I should watch where I'm going." She kept apologizing, a bit embarrassed, then looked up and saw a man who was standing, quietly, as if nothing had happened. He was tall and slender, appearing to be her father, and for a moment she was concerned, but it was not him, not without his cloak.

"Ehy, Baby, where are you running to so fast at this hour?" The man asked, softly.

"Lord Ruthven?" Mavis asked, a little insecure.

"Just call me Ruth." The nobleman said. "And you? Are you hurt?"

"No, nothing serious." The girl replied. "But how did you remain so impassive during a crash like that?" She continued as she tried to get up.

The woman replied with a slight smile."You can run into the kitchen and drink your synthetic surrogates until you burst, but nothing will change. Since you've tasted it your body asks for more, it's a natural survival instinct."

"But my father was able to quit and even me until now! " Mavis whimpered.

"Someone told to you that your father has taken more than a century to defeat his nature correct? And he often had bursts of anger so violent that Marta and their friends almost died because of him? A vampire in abstinence from blood is like a newly"reborn vampire, violent and uncontrollable."

"Yes, he mentioned these things, which is why they waited to have a child. So you think I'll find it hard to heal? " Said the young girl.

The woman took Mavis' head and then moved face to face with her, "You. Are. Not. Sick." She said, enunciating each word, "There's nothing wrong with you; there's nothing to which you have to heal. " She concluded.

"No..." The girl whispered, angry with herself for not being strong enough to repress her instincts. "It's wrong hurt others, I'll not kill anyone!"

Erzsebet left Mavis who seemed on the verge of tears.

"And all the scorpions and pigeons that you have fun during your hunts?" Ruthven interjected. "You're not hurting them? After all, humans are animals too, you should take them for what they are, you should accept you for what you are."

Mavis grimaced, annoyed at what she had just heard. Erzsebet noticed this, so she soon found a way to patch up the excessive frankness before she lost her confidence in them.

"Don't pay any attention to what my husband says, he was never good at words..." She said, chuckling slightly. "What he wants to say is there are different ways to drink human blood, and was precisely this that has cracked the relationship between us and your father. His problem is that he is a bit... dullard."

At these words, Mavis replied with a glare that made Erzsebet laugh, who ironically exclaimed:

"What is it? Would you say it's not true?"

"You're right!" The girl chuckled, amused, then the woman went on:

"Dracula denies drinking human blood, instead we do, but without hurting, or compelling anyone, what's wrong with that?"

Mavis was puzzled, this reasoning could not be faulted, but she still did not fully agree.

"Mavy? " Ruthven exclaimed, "The sun has set; we have less than half hour before it is dark enough to wake everyone. We cannot allow you meet Jonathan in your condition. Come with us, we can help you. " The nobleman concluded, taking the girl's hand, but she withdrew it immediately. "You want me to drink human blood?!" She shouted, horrified, looking at them.

"We don't want to force you; you're free to do what you want. It's just that we're worried about you."

"Thank you, but I don't need it." She replied, coldly.

"As you wish, but let me give you one last tip, close your eyes and listen."

Mavis gave a shrug of her shoulders and closed her eyes.

Tump, tump... tump, tump...

She clearly heard, in the silence of stairs, a rhythmic beat. It was calm and pleasant, so much so she was irresistibly attracted, but suddenly the girl was startled, terrified.

"Red looks good on you, even more than blue!" The woman exclaimed, amused, and Mavis looked at her, bewildered. "I speak about your eyes, now you've calmed down, but a moment ago your eyes hungered for blood. You heard Jonathan's heartbeat and that was enough to topple your willpower. Think what would happen if he were in front of you. Are you really sure you want to hurt the people you love?"

"My father will help me."

"I'm sure, just as he helped Jonathan when he was a newly-reborn vampire; a magic seal, chains and a dagger soaked in the blood of a corpse..."

"Shut up!" Mavis yelled, just the memory of what she had seen hurt her more than a dagger. "How do you know that?"

"The news travels fast, and I'm not surprised, it was the same method that your daddy used on himself during his worst rage crisis. Unfortunately it's the only way to hold a vampire without killing him."

The girl clenched her fists, "I have no choice, please help me!"
